“It’s still a punch in the gut, but it wasn’t a surprise at all.” In a few days, the Mississippi abortion clinic at the centre of the US Supreme Court’s monumental decision to overturn Roe v Wade, will close its doors. | FarrahTomazin

It’s just before 10am when a grey Honda enters the car park of the only abortion clinic in Mississippi.

One man with a portable speaker is standing at the clinic’s fence, peering through a tiny gap in the black-painted wood, trying to catch a glimpse of patients as they pass. “It’s going to be extremely difficult for people here, and elsewhere, to take time off work, or to arrange for childcare, or to pay for a trip to a distant state - simply so they don’t have to be forced to bear children against their will.”

“We need to adopt more children from these women or help them through the pregnancy - otherwise we’d be hypocrites, right?” says retired engineer Doug Hiser, who is sitting by himself outside the clinic with a sign that reads “Pray to End Abortion”. “You can’t control the situation of pregnancy: condoms break, birth control doesn’t work, so many different things can happen. There are so many girls like me at this age who don’t want children, and now we’re being told that we are going to be forced to have children regardless of the circumstances. How is that going to help anyone?”
