The Victorian government is about to decide on whether a controversial and massive new mountain bike network will be built around Warburton, in the Yarra Ranges.

It could be great news for local businesses recovering from the pandemic.

As an elite mountain bike rider, Ms Hore competes around Australia and expects the Warburton trails will be world-class. "For young people who are stuck on screens or maybe stuck at home without a big backyard, a project like this allows them to be exposed to the environment, to nature and physical activity," Ms Hore said."It's an excellent sport to get involved in at a young age, even an older age as well."The council's primary reason for building the park is economic, with hopes thousands of tourists will flock to the trails.

But I think overall the economic development and growth that we'll experience in town will be a positive for everybody involved," he said. It's not so positive for Damien Flynn and 14 other families living at Old Warburton in the hills just south of the main town."We are completely encircled by trails. It would be the first mountain bike park in Australia to have a residential area in the middle of it," Mr Flynn said.
