Jostling crowds have made viewing Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece one of Europe’s most disappointing experiences. Now there are moves to protect her from the hordes.
What in the World, a free weekly newsletter from our foreign correspondents, is sent every Thursday. Below is an excerpt.Anyone who has visited her recently will tell you that viewing the world’s most famous painting is just about the world’s worst tourism experience.
But there is undoubtedly an aura about this painting, perhaps even shaped by her story here at the Louvre. She wasand hidden during the Nazi occupation. She had a stone thrown at her and was attacked with acid in the 1950s.
Massive crowds surround it, pushing and shoving. It’s best if you’re not claustrophobic. The fawning with selfie-stick love is incredibly crass and unbecoming.I’m told that, typically, the room becomes so congested that visitors spend an average of only 50 seconds viewing the painting, and not everyone can get a clear view, especially children and those with mobility issues. Waiting times can run up to two hours.
