CASEY BRIGGS, REPORTER: On November 5th when US voters go to the polls Bill Roth’s name is on the ballot at the very bottom.
CASEY BRIGGS: Higher up the ballot from water district there’s a vacancy for a county-wide position and it’s one Australians would be surprised by.Johnene Stebbins is running for that spot on the bench. Putting her name, and her record as a deputy district attorney, out there and hoping voters remember it.
JOHNENE STEBBINS: I've gotten questions about immigration. I've gotten questions about Israel and Gaza, stuff that will never come across my desk like that. These are passionate issues for people, and they want to know how you stand. She spent decades on the bench - first appointed to a Lower Court then elected to the Santa Clara Superior Court in 1988.
And in my view, it's just all wrong. If you're taking money from special interest groups, then you're beholden to them.Should we expect elected judges to do the same? LADORIS HAZZARD CORDELL: That's what judicial elections do. They incentivise judges to change their decision-making behaviours. And that is just horrible for a judiciary which was founded in this country on being independent and objective.JOHNENE STEBBINS: Well, I mean if it's a reasonable way to choose your president, I suppose it's a reasonable way to choose judges.
