The major growth areas in south-east Queensland are often beyond the reach of public transport, leaving residents exposed to high petrol prices as well as rising interest rates.

Residential estates should never expand into vulnerable outer suburban communities without public transport connections, one of Australia’s leading urban planners has warned.

Red areas show high household vulnerability to increases in mortgage and petrol costs as commuters are still forced to drive. The Caboolture West, Southern Redlands, and Yarrabilba growth areas are all in these red “highly vulnerable areas”.“State governments in Australia – and the federal government – have known for decades that they have been developing growth areas without adequate public transport,” Dodson said.

Seven of those Priority Growth Areas could be home to an additional 440,000 people over the next 40 years, according to government figures. Yet rail and even bus services are lacking - Ripley Valley may benefit from the Springfield rail extension, and Caloundra South from an extension still in the planning stage, however Yarrabilba is a 48-minute bus ride away from the Beenleigh to Kuraby line.Caboolture West – 30,000 homes for about 70,000 peopleRipley Valley – 120,000 people.

“With more people moving to Queensland, we are prioritising growth areas like Caboolture West to unlock land supply and make more residential lots available quicker.”
