At 15, Niki Zefanya earned a coveted spot opening for Taylor Swift. Almost ten years later, she sifts through her past as a teenage YouTuber with her dreamy new album, 'Nicole.'
, whose dreamy R&B lilts have effectively made her patron saint of all sad Asian diaspora girlies at large,tackles such double-edged expectations via flashback—thematically and literally—to her days as a teenage YouTuber.
“I remember contemplating just deleting them,” Zefanya tells me of the videos she used to post of herself singing as @nzee24, back when she was growing up in Jakarta and writing her first songs about falling in and out of young love. “I was like…who cares? Nobody will miss them or know.
–esque project turned what might have been a manageable audio-based exercise in flashback into an excruciating cinematic treatment likely eligible for whatever performance-art award any human should get in exchange for literally reenacting their first big breakup. “Shooting was definitely the roller coaster of ‘what the fuck?’” she says.
Over panzanella and a hilariously large keto platter, we hypothesize how her audience, likely accustomed to Zefanya’s bouncier R&B repertoire, will take to the new record, especially live. “I just feel like we’re all going to be sad and emotional together, which sounds like a ball,” she laughs.
