It will also be the largest VIP protection operation the force has dealt with, as around 500 of world leaders, dignitaries and other VIPs are expected to attend the first state funeral in the UK since the death of wartime prime minister Winston Churchill in 1965. The Met has installed more than 22 miles of barriers in central London alone to control crowds and keep key areas secure.on Friday morning as being “something we are always very mindful of when it comes to major events”.
Mr De Meyer added: “As with any operation, we will encourage people to let us know if they think that something doesn’t look quite right.”Both senior officers insisted that the police would respect people’s “right to protest” during this period of mourning. Mr Cundy called the number of arrests recorded by Friday morning “relatively few”, but was unable to provide a breakdown of the offences involved.
Nick Aldworth, who was until 2019 the police national coordinator for UK counter terrorism, points to events outside London as being potentially less secure than the funeral route from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner.
