Mitch McConnell’s decision to step down as Senate GOP Leader means the race to replace him that was in the shadows is now entering the spotlight.

While no one knows yet who will succeed McConnell, the leading contenders all happen to have the most common name in the U.S. Senate .: the current No. 2 GOP senator, John Thune ; the former No. 2 GOP senator, John Cornyn ; and Senate GOP Conference Chairman John Barrasso .
