Teachers in NSW have gone on strike three times in six months, arguing they are not earning enough. Here are five graphs that explain how much they get paid.

Although new teachers earn about $70,000 a year , the capacity to earn more peters out after a decade. Unlike other professions, in which salaries increase alongside experience and age, teachers are stuck on the same wage for most of their career. It’s what Grattan calls “master teachers”, who would be promoted based on expertise instead of seniority, and would work as “pedagogical leaders in their subjects, working across a network of schools in their region”. Grattan also suggested the creation of instructional specialist roles who would “work within their own schools to support and guide other teachers”.

“Teacher workload and workload stress are common among teachers and, according to recent reports, it’s getting worse,” says Rebecca Collie, an associate professor of educational psychology from the University of NSW. However, teacher shortages are more to do with location and subject area, particularly in secondary schools. In other words, finding an experienced and fully qualified maths teacher for a high school in western NSW is close to impossible.
