As the global airways of the mid-20th century began broadcasting the pulsating melodies and captivating instrumentals of reggae, a relatively minuscule island in the heart of the Caribbean became known around the world. Bob Marley and his fellow Rastafari, with their free-flowing dreadlocks and the hazy smoke of marijuana amidst white sands and palm trees, became synonymous with Jamaica and the wider Caribbean by association.

Beyond the umbrella-laden cocktails of the all-inclusive resorts scattered across the coastal towns of Negril and Montego Bay, the Jamaica Tourist Board used foods of the island to create a national identity that in turn could serve as an outward facing brand. Jamaica’s new national slogan of “out of many we are one” celebrated the various ethnicities—African, Asian, American, European, and others—that make up the island.
