Coogan's portrayal of the serial abuser is near flawless in this utterly harrowing and sensitively handled series

Coogan’s portrayal of the serial abuser is near flawless in this utterly harrowing and sensitively handled seriesSince 2011, when his extensive crimes came to light, “Savile” has become shorthand for a monster, hiding in plain sight. What stops us defending thisas “innocent until proven guilty” is the sheer weight of testimony from the victims who have come forward. There are just too many of them .

It is an impersonation of sorts, but Coogan’s control over his voice and physicality are exceptional. Even when playing comic grotesques like Alan Partridge, he is able to render the minutiae with horrible truth, as though he knows every cog and impulse in his character’s brain. But here he makes the reach towards all-out evil look almost effortless.

The programme does an impressive job of conveying the darkness of Savile’s actions without forcing us to look directly at them. Goldbacher’s direction very occasionally strays into cliché as young faces look up in fear at the looming celebrity, his eyes changing from kindness to malevolence as sinister music swells in the background.

McKay’s script adeptly alludes to Savile’s web of high-status alibis. Even as he ushers another unfortunate teenager into his dressing room, they must pass by pictures of the TV star with royalty, the Prime Minister, even the Pope.announces that it intends to examine how someone whose crimes were so prolific was able to hide them for so long, and it does go some way to achieving that.
