The NSW back three of James Tedesco, Brian To’o and Daniel Tupou combined in devastating fashion to lay the foundations for victory against Queensland in Origin II.

The largest combined run metres from a back three in almost 20 years, and a likely all-time Origin record, laid the foundations for the Blues’ revival and a potential Maroons rethink in next month’s series decider.

Given yardage statistics have exploded in that period, especially in the six-again era, and Origin contests have only increased in terms of speed and ball-in-play time, the 720 metres amassed by Tedesco, To’o and Tupou is unlikely to have been trumped since 1980. Given the advantage the Blues have enjoyed from the backfield, Billy Slater may well look to Corey Oates to beef up his back three at Suncorp Stadium.

Playing a key role in those quick play-the-balls Paulo speaks of also is the impressive post-contact efforts of the Blues back three. With NRL Stats recording just three of the combined 71 runs from Tedesco, To’o and Tupou as dummy-half scoots, 242 of their run metres were classified as post-contact, more than a third of that 720-metre tally.
