The renaissance men of today, shaking off the shackles of Newcastle United cursed history nufc

This was one that created much debate, as the pre-match discussion fluctuated wildly between advocates for a completely changed starting XI, to those claiming momentum was essential, and the big guns should stay in given the lengthy break coming our way after Saturday.

Something wasn’t clicking though and Palace seemed to have a lot of the ball first half, with Pope needing to be alert to tip Mateta’s drive over the bar. United seemed to struggle to create anything, with Joelinton looking lively in midfield but Longstaff seeming a bit leggy and Saint-Maximin completely out of sorts following his recent absence. The only effort I remember from the first half was a tame shot from Longstaff that back-up Palace keeper Johnstone easily gathered.

Chris Wood stepped forward first. He’s taken a couple of decent penalties for us, this would be fine. Wood pinged it in, pressure on Palace. Up steps Joelinton and I was unnaturally calm, with some memory of Joe taking an outstanding penalty a couple of years back that I’m obviously not going to research. He repeated the trick for 3-1 and United were almost there.Botman then strode forward, which seemed an odd choice, but there would definitely be solid thinking at work. Sven’s pen was a two out of ten, as he floated it down the middle at a good height for Johnstone to save. Bo..ocks.
