Can a 53-year-old Australian male emerge from an Aman Essential treatment and glow like the brand’s 28-year-old chief executive?

ne of the first things I noticed during my first summer in Tokyo was the Vampire-like behaviour of its fair-skinned and fashion-conscious inhabitants.

Kristina Romanova, a Russian-born model turned businesswoman, was struck by the exceptional state of Japanese skin during her first visit to Tokyo eight years ago. The self-described “beauty junkie” realised there was an opportunity to market Japan’s beauty secrets to the world. “I was always amazed by the skin of Japanese people and I wanted to try something with a Japanese manufacturer,” says Romanova, the chief executive of Aman Resorts’ luxury retail brand, Aman Essentials.

These botanical ingredients include “purple brown rice” introduced to Japan 3000 years ago, which contains more “y-Oryzanol” than regular rice. Aman’s marketing team tells us the extract from this rice has a firming effect and is a wonder for preventing wrinkles. As a 53-year-old male who rarely does more than slap on a bit of moisturiser, it is all a bit beyond me. But my Japanese translator, who is also a skincare junkie, is excited about the products we are now dabbing onto our hands.“The hand cream has good moisture retention. My hands are still smooth,” she messages me hours after we have sampled the products. “It made me feel rejuvenated hand-wise.”Views towards the Tokyo skyline at dusk, viewed from the spa at Aman Tokyo.
