The daughter of a “knackered” Brisbane cafe owner found a novel way to attract staff. It worked, but many other small businesses haven’t been so lucky.
Amid desperation and months of searching for workers, the daughter of a cafe owner posted a photo of her father sleeping on the couch after a hard day’s work of overtime, in the hope of finding staff to help. And it worked like a charm.
“I wanted to capture the essence of what our business is all about and what our family is like. The response has been unreal.”Vincent said the cafe experienced some highs and lows throughout the pandemic but began thriving as people in lockdown emerged for their morning coffees.Forages Cafe owner Paul Vincent and daughter Georgia.
“Our son and daughter are in the business, and we were having to do extra hours because whenever we placed an ad, we just weren’t getting responses, or when we did, they never showed up for work,” he said.Vincent was unaware of his daughter’s Facebook post – which attracted more than 80 responses from jobseekers – but he said having the image of him on the internet didn’t phase him.
Cést Bon Restaurant and Bar’s Andy Ashby – another overworked owner who has been working about 100 hours a week – hasn’t been so lucky, only managing to fill two of six vacant positions after about six months of advertising.I’m worried we’re not going to find these people in time for busy periods.“We knew COVID would be an issue but, as owners, we didn’t know the next problem would be not having enough staff. It’s scary.
