“Thematically, Party Down is always asking the question, ‘How long do you chase the dream?’ And that’s an evergreen concept. We always knew that it could stand the test of time.”
’s cast and creators all admit that they’ve certainly felt pressure to satisfy every single fan desire in the third season, they also know that’s a bit of a fool’s errand. Adam Scott, who both stars in and produces the series, says he views’s very existence in 2023 as a type of fan service. “We’ve always just counted on the fact that we were making a season and doing what we thought was the right thing for these characters, and that would have to be enough,” says Scott.
In some sense, that approach was born of necessity once producers realized original cast member Lizzy Caplan wouldn’t be able to return. For much of the show’s first two seasons, the “will they or won’t they” romance between Caplan’s Casey and Scott’s Henry captivated fans, so when it became clear that Caplan’s commitment to FX’s’s writers had to figure out a way to both address her absence and introduce some sort of new conflict into Henry’s romantic life.
Fortunately, they didn’t have the same dreams for the pair that some fans did. “I don't think we ever imagined that at the end of season two, Henry and Casey became this legendary couple who got married and lived this romantic life,” says Enbom. “We never thought of the show in those terms. We always thought of their relationship as being what was happening right then and there.
