A meeting is always set. Redman and the opponent’s equipment manager arrive at the officiating crew’s office two hours and 45 minutes before kickoff. Sometimes they’re early. Sometimes they shoot the breeze. There was a time when Redman didn’t consider the impact of a football’s small leather craters, either. That revelation didn’t arrive until after he was the head student equipment manager at the University of Connecticut, after he joined the Patriots in 2017 and spent three seasons on the team’s equipment staff.
Ah yes. The scrubbing. Back in the bowels of NRG Stadium, the hard part’s just beginning. The officials and the equipment managers sync up their 60-minute timers. If either manager is not back in time, his team is subject to league discipline. Redman has never been late. He hustles to a private room. He sets the K-Balls on the floor and grabs a small brush.
