The safe way to get rid of earwax 💬 'People find it satisfying, like pimple-popping'
Microsuction is the “gold standard”, says Raithatha, but for those who are lucky enough to have their ears cleared by their GP, they might well be offered ear irrigation, where water is used to flush out the earwax. It’s more controlled than the long-abandoned syringing technique, where water is injected into the ear to blast out any wax, but ear irrigation is still risky. “There’s still a chance of perforating the eardrum,” Raithatha says.
He was also called upon to extract an earring from a woman’s ear, which had managed to stick to the eardrum. And a woman who had used a comb to scratch her ear hadn’t realised that one of the teeth had snapped off. “It was like a dagger over the eardrum,” says Raithatha. “I’ve removed pen caps from people’s ears – they use them to try and scratch their ears,” he adds.
