An Australian journalist has slammed the International Olympic Committee for allowing an Algerian boxer to compete in the Pairs Games, despite failing a gender test last year.

Journalist Peter Badel says boxer Imane Khelif should not be in the Paris Olympics after previously failing gender eligibility test

The Italian was left visibly bloodied and later told reporters she feared her nose had been broken, before the 25-year-old decided to pull out of the competition. The tests found the Algerian competitor - as well as Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting - had the presence of XY chromosomes in their system, typically found in males.

"Steroids wouldn’t be allowed at the Olympics and in that case I don’t believe Khelif should be fighting against women," Badel continued. Ahead of the Paris Games, the IOC gave the green light for Khelif and Lin to compete because the pair had passports which stated they were female.
