It is 2024 and fashion is well positioned for a revival of Heelys: a beefed-up sneaker shoe with in-built wheels, once beloved by primary school children with places to go and people to see. I write this not from a place of bombast, but a line of serious journalistic inquisition – one that started with the resurgent interest in Isabel Marant’s wedge sneakers back in 2022, and continues with New Balance’s soon-to-be-launched “loafers”.
More noble writers have interpreted this trend – of sneaker-fying just about everything – as being symptomatic of serious social change, a result of the erosion of formal dress codes and the blurring of work-life boundaries. “When you got gym after church,” as Collin Castro so deftly put it. But I will offer an alternative viewpoint: that the intersection of ugliness and cool has simply become… convention.
