I'm Kate Linebaugh. It's Wednesday, September 22nd. Coming up on the show, the diplomatic spat between France and the U.S. over a multi billion dollar submarine deal. How would you describe the relationship between the U.S. and France over history?
Speaker 4: It was true when Lafayette crossed the Atlantic to help Americans achieve liberty. It was true in 1917 when General Pershing's army arrived in France and his aid proclaimed, "Lafayette, we are here." Matthew Dalton: Macron, Biden, and Boris Johnson were there. Boris Johnson was the host of the meeting. Biden and Macron seemed to be getting on swimmingly.Matthew Dalton: They walked on the beach, they put their arms around each other. Biden said, "I'm so happy to be here with the President of France."Matthew Dalton: America's back on the world stage.Matthew Dalton: This was supposed to be the reconciliation between the U.S.
Matthew Dalton: This wasn't such a job creation project back in France. It's not like there were going to be thousands of new jobs created by this. This was more of a sending a geopolitical and diplomatic signal that Australia is now one of France's closest allies, and the two countries are going to be working very closely together.Matthew Dalton: So, Australia's diplomatic relations with China been deteriorating for a few years.
Matthew Dalton: The Biden administration is very concerned about China's rising assertiveness in the region. China's making all kinds of noises in the South China Sea. They're treating it not as an international waterway, but as their own back pond. They're making threatening noises towards Taiwan and undermining the independence of Taiwan. All those positions are very worrying to the U.S., and so together, the U.S.
