The songs, the story and Kylie's role - Pete Waterman reveals details of new I Should Be So Lucky SAW musical that will premiere in Manchester
Musical theatre and Kylie Minogue fans have been sent into a frenzy this week after it was announced that the pop princess will have a role in the new Stock Aitken Waterman musical named after her debut hit - I Should Be So Lucky. The brand new show will premiere in Manchester with a host of the SAW's biggest hits from the 80s and 90s as the soundtrack - although the show itself is set in present day.
Debbie told the MEN of Kylie's role: "Kylie will be like the "alter-ego" of our main character, Ella, in the show. Kylie will almost be like the Fairy Godmother in the Mirror. We heard belting versions of Kylie's Better the Devil You Know, Especially for You and I Should Be So Lucky, her 1987 debut smash hit working alongside Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman - the producers who became known as the SAW "Hit Factory".
Pete hails Kylie as "like a daughter" to him. "The thing is Kylie is like my daughter, of course she is. When she first came to England her and her mum stayed with me in my flat in London, then she came and lived in Warrington with me for a time."I think, like a child when you leave home, you don't want anything to do with your parents cos you're a teenager and you're making your own way. Then later on you think "oh actually my mum and dad were alright".
"It was important - my feedback was coming from the record stores in the north west, radio in the north west, television in the north west. London didn't really figure. So I was ecstatic that the show is premiering in Manchester, because it means I can come to it every day."
