Four nights ago Noah Lyles left the Stade de France with an Olympic medal. Tonight he left in a wheelchair wearing a Covid mask.
Noah Lyles didn’t expect it to end this way. Four nights after leaving the Stade de France as the fastest man in the world, the sprinting showman Lyles was wheeled from Paris’s stadium in a wheelchair clearly distressed, wearing a facemask and suffering from Covid.
Lyles said after the race: “I just was feeling really horrible. I knew it was more than just being sore from the 100 … I woke up the doctors and tested and unfortunately it came up positive.” First he was given a yellow card before the gun event went, apparently because as he danced and readied himself for the race he kicked his lane five box and the number fell off. Naughty boy.Noah Lyles lies on the track after finishing third in the men’s 200m in Paris. When he finished the race he looked in clear discomfort and first sat to the ground as if trying to grab his breath, with none of the jubilation and dancing of Sunday night.
He got an uncharacteristically good start and was looking strong turning into the home straight until Tebogo and teammate Kenny Bednarek shifted up gears and Lyles had nowhere else to go. “I did hear he said something,” Bednarek said. “I didn’t know exactly what he said, but Noah’s going to say whatever he does. I just let my feet do the talking.”
