as she corresponds with Michael, then in prison awaiting appeal, and goes about her work, curating and stitching together the 500 hours of footage collected by directorThere’s an electrifyingly strange scene in which Sophie, Jean-Xavier, and their producer argue over the shape of the film and over Sophie’s too-close-to-the-case epistolary involvement with Michael.
On some occasions, maybe it’s both. The show’s portrait of the Peterson marriage—so shrewdly performed by Firth and Collette—is complicated and slippery. They’re good-times party people, but also cozy and domestic. They share an ardent sexual and social rapport, but there is also a prickliness, an aloof quality to the way they glide past one another in this big house.
Who knows! Who knows, who knows, who knows. It’s that willingness to question and doubt—and to guide its audience into this mode of investigation and introspection—that elevatesabove many of its based-on-a-real-case television brethren. There is a great whirring mind behind the series; it almost seems to gain its own sentience as it goes.
In 2016, Campos took a similar gimlet eye to the tragic and inscrutable case of Christine Chubbuck in his under-seen drama. In both pieces, Campos thinks about these media storms and private pains in all their many facets. He inspects them fluidly but without any obvious point-making purpose, as if he has led us into a murky pool with him—one deep and dark enough that we eventually lose all directional awareness of the surface, of any notion of objective truth.
