The Star has underpaid the NSW government almost $9 million in taxes after it found its residency checks on gamblers were “frequently lacking”, as the gaming giant braces for the release of a report into its suitability to hold a casino licence.The casino group has told the government it owes $8.7 million after allowing gamblers to play as international “rebate players” – meaning they paid lower gambling duties than NSW residents.
After an internal review, The Star has written to Kean advising that an initial investigation revealed compliance with its residency check standard operating procedures was “frequently lacking”.
