Employers in Victoria and Tasmania were hit the hardest by last month’s surge in COVID-19 and flu cases that pushed leave rates higher.

Employers in Victoria and Tasmania were hit the hardest by last month’s surge in COVID-19 and flu cases, as leave rates soared more than 50 per cent higher than the long-term average.

Isabella Bennetts-Roberts of OiOi Global said she had had to work long hours and weekends as well as call on family and friends to help fulfil orders at times of high staff absences. “In the past three or four months, in particular, there’s been a rotating schedule with staff because everyone has been getting sick quite a bit,” she said.

Data for the last week of June and first week of July reveals absenteeism rates are already tracking 24 per cent higher than the long-term average.Helen Lea, MYOB’s chief employee experience officer, said the rise in worker absences was likely due to the combination of the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on top of what has been described as a major flu season.

“In that month, it just seemed that in Melbourne in particular, there were a lot of things going around and people were taking time off because of school holidays, so trying to find extra staff to cover those time was certainly a challenge,” she said.
