The United States and European countries have warned the “battle between freedom and tyranny” has not ended as world leaders met in Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Leaders from Australia, the United States, United Kingdom and France have signed the Declaration of Normandy on the 80th anniversary of D-Day as they warned the struggle for freedom has not ended.

President Biden warned “the struggle between a dictatorship and freedom is unending” as he connected the events of WWII with the ongoing war in Ukraine. “And it will not end there. Ukraine’s neighbours will be threatened. All of Europe will be threatened. However, the possible deployment of military to Ukraine has divided Europeans and earlier this year the US Senate blocked a foreign aid package to the country for several months.

France has regularly threatened to send troops into the battle but has been firmly threatened by Moscow any time the matter was raised. As guest of honour in Normandy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared: “Allies defended Europe’s freedom then, and Ukrainians do so now. Unity prevailed then, and true unity can prevail today.”
