The percentage of fully electric vehicles sold in Queensland doubled in the first quarter of this year as drivers increasingly turn away from petrol, diesel – and even hybrid – cars, according to the state’s main transport lobby group.

As sales increase sharply, the RACQ’s head of public policy, Dr Michael Kane, launched a new web page on Sunday offeringNew technology such as the longer-lasting batteries in this Aion electric vehicle is piquing consumer interest, says the RACQ.“Last year, about 3.8 per cent of all new vehicle sales were fully electric,” he said. “In the first quarter of this year, that has jumped up to almost 7 per cent.

And under federal government rules, novated lease costs on electric vehicles are now fully tax-deductible, saving a buyer about $4500 or a small business about $9000, Kane said. Kane said environmental and climate change issues were still an important factor in people switching to hybrid and fully electric vehicles. However, he said drivability, the consumer experience and recycling were now bigger factors.Kane said the latest research showed electric car batteries could last 30 years before being recycled.“What we are seeing is that 95 per cent of the battery can be recycled into a new battery,” he said.“That is reflected in sales figures in Australia,” Kane said.
