Recycled coffee cups have been combined with crushed glass to produce roads across the Penrith region - and they won’t get as many potholes.
Coffee cups are notoriously difficult to recycle: the tiny plastic layering that sits on the inside of Australia’s obsession results in a huge amount of landfill.
Close to 400 metres of road on Jamison Road, South Penrith, and 350 metres of road on Swallow Drive, Erskine Park, have since March been resurfaced with a road surface mixture called PAK-PAVETM.Coffee cups “contain very high-quality fibre”, said Rob Pascoe, the managing director of Closed Loop, which collected the majority of the cups as part of its Simply Cups program within the Penrith LGA.
Penrith City Council says it is the first in the country to use that type of surface, which has better braking support and holds up better in wet weather.“We are seeing industry, business and government redefining resource recovery,” Hitchin said. “What was once rubbish is now resources that can be recycled, reused, remanufactured and reimagined.
