The alternative to the T3 train line faces its true test this week when students return to school and the traffic intensifies.
The inner south-west is broaching its rail shutdown with grim determination. Bicycles are being dusted off, alarms set earlier, activities – exercise, dog walks – curtailed. The metro that comes at the end of it will, they hope, will be worth the pain.
“The worst thing will be if people jump into their cars instead,” said Earlwood resident Jacqui Trenbath, who plans to ride her bike. “There’s already massive traffic jams, especially around schools in the morning.” For many residents, working from home will not be an option. The NSW government will not modify its back to the workplace edict to let affected public servants work from home, a spokeswoman said, so workers will have to negotiate directly with their manager. Many in the area can’t work from home, anyway; in Lakemba, 13 per cent of workers are labourers, 10 per cent are tradies and 6 per cent work in supermarkets.
“People can grin and bear it for a month or two, but longer term they might start to go, ‘I want to find an alternative job, or an alternative place to live’,” he said. “The longer it goes, people might say, ‘this isn’t manageable for me’. Given the length of time, we’re in a bit of uncharted territory here.”
Trenbath will either ride along the Cooks River path, or to Lewisham station on the inner west line. “I get about a 40-minute bike ride, and a 10-minute train,” she said.
