The technicolour Whitaker park and museum in Rossendale that's a haven for families
The spring sun peeps past the nose of a giant copper-coloured metal animal sculpture. It sits in the perfectly-manicured lawns in front of The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery in Rawtenstall.
The result is a contemporary space fused with the original features of the period mansion. Inside there's several art gallery rooms, a cafe, kitchen and bar where the stately home's stables used to be, alongside learning and workshop space.View gallery It is suitable for weddings and private functions and is a thriving community hub.
The building makes brilliant use of natural light and its elevated position in the Rossendale valley, and is quite literally a window to the patchwork landscape beyond. The stunning space has attracted a strong team of dedicated volunteers, who help run it day-to-day, gallery supervision, conduct tours and serve visitors in the cafe-kitchen, which also has a courtyard and outdoor seating.
It has it all, from a welcoming picnic area, multi-sports court, bowling green, football pitch, adventure play area and acres of plush, green grass. Taking a stroll around it, especially now in spring time with neon pink blossoms and piercing white snowdrops, is a thing of technicolour dreams.
