According to experts, the “looksmaxxing” trend is targeting vulnerable young people. So, how safe are the measures they’re taking?

Personal trainers and sports scientists say TikTok’s “looksmaxxing” trend, along with illegal steroid use among fitness influencers, is creating harmful physical expectations for teenagers, especially boys.

Vincent Dalbo, a lecturer in sports science at CQUniversity, says social media is creating unrealistic body standards. He says it could push many teen boys to consider potentially harmful fitness, beauty and nutrition habits, as they consider protein and creatine supplements incapable of helping them achieve their – often unattainable – goals.

“Young adults who attend the gym, and those who want to improve their appearance without ever having attended a gym, go on social media and can witness numerous famous individuals who ... looking great in a relatively short period of time, with the use of performance-enhancing drugs,” says Dalbo.

“You’ve got to be doing the work,” he says. “It’s not just something that you take and miraculously, things are going to change.”Dalbo is more concerned about online fitness influencers – some with hundreds of thousands of followers –He fears it might make more boys and young men who have never used steroids less afraid of their dangerous side effects.

He says, as a father to young children who himself started weight training in his early teens, he understands today’s young people are uniquely vulnerable.
