The top–and most unforgettable–collections of the Spring 2020 season.

; it was a little early for such a survey, maybe, but we had a good reason—the Spring 2020 shows that just wrapped were nearly upon us. The decade just passed saw the rise of social media, street wear, and street style. It gave us minimalism, maximalism, and minimalism again. And it solidified the power of the super-brands, while also birthing a new generation of savvy independents whose influence far exceeds their size.

Now, as a new decade dawns, the cycle is beginning all over again. What will fashion in the 2020s look like? The Spring 2020 collections gave us a few ideas. To start, as the effects of climate change continue to stack up, the pursuit of sustainability will become the most potent driver of change.

With the young leading the charge against giant corporations , the appeal of small labels with big visions will only grow. Our Vogue Runway colleague Sarah Mower argued in our 2010s portfolio that the decade belonged to. Erdem Moralioglu and Simone Rocha are examplars of the fact, two independents whose unique designs can’t be replicated, even though plenty have tried. We loved both of their collections this season.

As data becomes more and more integrated into how companies do business, tender human gestures will win the day. No one proved this better than Dries Van Noten, who produced his new collection in collaboration with Christian Lacroix, the couturier whose long absence from the runways has been much lamented. Their different aesthetics came together beautifully. But this show was more than the sum of its parts.

The season’s best collections set a template to ensure fashion’s future progress—and they produced some truly unforgettable clothes in the process. Here, in chronological order, the top 12 collections of Spring 2020.
