Victoria’s capital is draped in, and interspersed with, images that unpack what makes us who we are. Curator Elias Redstone shares his favourites.
, large-scale images of the Sarayaku people of Ecuador waft above the fish and vegetable stalls. Across the steps of Parliament House, photographs of regional Victoria transpose rural life to the capital. At the Old Melbourne Gaol, a photography and sound installation by Bidjara artist Christian Thompson haunts the courtyard.The theme of PHOTO 2022, Melbourne’s second International Festival of Photography, is “Being Human”.
PHOTO 2022 curator Elias Redstone: “By creating work at urban scale, we’re integrating art into daily life.”A kind of citywide al-fresco action, installations are also staged in some of Melbourne’s most august institutions, including the ACMI , the Centre for Contemporary Photography and the National Gallery of Victoria.
As a former senior curator at the Architecture Foundation in London, Redstone has previously developed cutting-edge projects in partnership with MoMA and Tate Modern . He was curator of the Polish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale before moving to Melbourne in 2016.
