The Tories don't have a coherent election strategy – and time is fast running out ✍️ wallaceme for ipaperviews
All calm? Jake Berry, Chairman of the Conservative Party, speaks on the final day of the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham , it is on the Sunday that the Conservative National Convention meets.
It’s a measure of the convention’s importance that the PM is always the lead speaker – this year, despite her woes, Liz Truss was felt to have come across well, avoiding the rough ride that various of her predecessors have received. It was a stark contrast from 2012, when the National Convention were the first to hear of the “40/40 strategy” – the plan to defend 40 seats and attack 40 more,That plan wasn’t fleshed out in every detail, but it was coherent and contained all of the seeds from which victory subsequently grew. When it was presented to the Convention, its architects had almost three years to put it into action. In the end, they needed every day of that time.
One senior Conservative recently sought to reassure my qualms by telling me the next election will be fought on an “80/20” strategy – 80 seats to defend, 20 to gain.
