I'd spent so much time preparing him but I hadn't considered how momentous the change would be for me.
I've learnt a lot, but the lesson I think has been most significant is that letting go of perfection is best. The mental load balloons with the added responsibility of school life but I can't volunteer for every cause and attend all the events. We do what we can and don't feel guilty when we can't. When Sydney parents of four Jodi and Daniel decided to take a road trip, it proved to be a life-changing act.Our family school life hasn't always unfolded in classrooms. We spent a few years travelling Australia in a caravan when my eldest children were enrolled in distance education.
Understanding this took time. It took even longer to trust in it and not be swayed by the general markers outlined by the school system. Now, I'm not caught up in perfection but instead encourage progress, knowing that it's rarely linear. I still demand a sibling photo on the first day of the school year and I always cry behind the camera. It's a marker of the years passing and one undeniable fact: they're growing up and leaving behind their littleness. I miss their younger selves.
