The film stars Colin Ford as Rickey Hill, a young man with a degenerative spinal disease that becomes something of a baseball phenomenon in his small Texas town. However, things become serious when Rickey decides to follow his dreams of becoming a professional baseball player.
Rickey Hill Was Born With A Degenerative Spine Disorder Before The Hill could become a movie about baseball, it has to explore Hill's degenerative spine disorder, wherein he was born with a disc missing from his spine. From his birth to the age of 4, Hill underwent countless surgeries to allow him to walk. At age 5, Hill began wearing leg braces that allowed him to walk, though not entirely normally. This led to Hill having to face bullies and judgment from his peers.
Rickey Hill Was A Minor League Baseball Player Although Rickey Hill faced obstacles such as his degenerative spine disease, his family's poverty, and doubts from those around him, he eventually succeeded and became a minor league baseball player. In 1975, at the age of 19, Hill was signed by the Montreal Expos and played a total of four seasons in the minor leagues. According to Hill, he would take 500 swings per day from the age of 12 until his career ended around 22.
Rickey Hill’s Spine Disorder Cut His Baseball Career Short Despite the fact that Rickey Hill overcame his spine disorder to become a minor league baseball player, his condition ultimately won out. During the 1978 baseball season, Hill was playing for the Grays Harbor Loggers, when his body eventually gave out from the stress of playing baseball.
