Angered 49ers awaken after Jonathan Abram twisted Deebo Samuel’s ankle, and that anger...
The San Francisco 49ers’ George Kittle and Deebo Samuel during Saturday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara, Calif.San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan ran onto the field, screaming expletives at officials, feeling so much fury, he’d say later, that he was in a “blackout” state.
“The Catch” is the biggest moment in 49ers’ playoff history. But what Abram did to Samuel on Saturday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium — let’s call it “The Twist” — might find its way onto the list. The onslaught included two takeaways that led to 14 points and three offensive touchdowns, a scoring barrage that, fittingly, included Samuel’s revenge: With the 49ers leading 31-17 early in the fourth quarter, he caught a pass eight yards beyond the line of scrimmage and sprinted down the left sideline for a 74-yard touchdown that effectively ended Seattle’s season.
The 49ers advanced to the divisional round after a reminder that a journey to their first Super Bowl title in 28 years will likely require more grit than a regular season in which they had an NFL-high 16.8-point margin of victory and finished with a 10-game winning streak. The Seahawks led 17-16 at halftime after a second quarter in which they had scoring drives of 78 and 71 yards, scoring more touchdowns against the NFL’s top-ranked defense than they managed in eight quarters during the regular season.
