A visitor said it was 'one of the spookiest places I have ever visited'
It’s that time of year again when we get in touch with our spooky side and, with Halloween fast approaching, our minds turn to creepy ghost stories and ghoulish tales of things that go bump in the night. A visit to an old castle can help you get into the mood and one of the UK’s reputedly most haunted castles is only a couple of hours drive away from Greater Manchester.
Muncaster Castle is a place steeped in history. The building is believed to be built upon Roman remains and, according to some records, the land has been in the Pennington family since the 1020s. A castle was constructed on the site in the later 13th century, and was enlarged in the 14th when a pele tower was built. Over the following centuries the estate has been developed, creating the beautiful gardens you can see today.
The castle’s most haunted room is The Tapestry Room and visitors often claim they can hear footsteps outside in the corridor or see the door handle turn when no one's there. People have even reported feeling a chill in the room and hearing a child crying - scary stuff indeed.
