After a 'sickening' injury — one that could have ended his career — Baylor’s Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua is a walking miracle.

“All injuries are hard mentally, but one thing that others can really rely on is people have done that,” he says. “People came back. There’s the science to come back. It was done before. In my case, I’m more like a one-of-a-kind scenario.”

Tchamwa Tchatchoua was drenched, dripping in sweat. Another day, another workout with Coach P. Usually he went early in the morning when his leg was the loosest, but on this mid-November day, Baylor was at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, prepping for a game against. Tchamwa Tchatchoua waited until after shootaround to get in his workout, as his teammates were supposed to be en route to their hotel across the street to meet for pregame film.

But day by day, he’d get closer. A couple weeks later he dunked a ball, a monumental stepping stone. Eventually, Peterson asked him to run the floor. Then sprint the floor. Every day he’d get a little more burst. Every day he’d get a little more trust in his knee. “Every time that you write in the diary, it’s a different person at a different time,” he says. “Just seeing the little things I used to struggle with and just be able to compare where I am right now, I’m grateful.”

“It wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be,” he says. “I feel like I’ve worked so much on my shot it was more like you owe it to yourself to actually just shoot it and actually making the shot.” The game is just the test, he says. And, by everyone else’s standards, he’d aced his first exam. Of course, Tchamwa Tchatchoua critiqued the film and saw room for improvement.
