Beloved entertainers The Wiggles have warned Labor’s bid to ban children from YouTube may leave families with fewer safe ways to view children’s content.

The Wiggles , Bounce Patrol criticise Labor 's under 16s social media ban for leaving families with 'fewer safe' ways to watch educational content

Labor’s proposal as it currently stands would unintentionally prevent new generations of Australian children from accessing this free content from The Wiggles, including the 24/7 livestream it offers.“While we commend efforts to raise the minimum age for social media access to 16 years, we also welcome the opportunity to consult with Minister Rowland and the government to avoid misclassifying YouTube as social media,” The Wiggles HQ said.

Bounce Patrol and The Wiggles have raised concerns about the Labor government's plan to place a blanket ban on social media, a move which could limit access to educational content on YouTube. Picture: Bounce Patrol KidsSky News spoke to Australia’s largest YouTube channel, Bounce Patrol, who also expressed “deep concerns” over the impact the government’s legislation could have on children’s content creators.

“If the proposed legislation includes YouTube, these families could lose access to our videos, as the tech platforms take steps to ensure children aren’t watching.” Top academics have similarly argued the government’s approach to online safety has ill-considered the adverse effects of a blanket ban. The social media expert said the government’s efforts ought to focus on ensuring social media services provide a safer space for young people rather than how to exclude children.
