“I think it was our time,” Davis said. “Our time.”
Davis got out of some tough situations with Grand Oaks threatening on multiple occasions, and freshman Chesney Davis came on in the seventh to clean it up to secure the victory. “Saylor and Chesney both pitched a heck of a game,” Highlanders coach Tim Borths said. “Both of them worked out of some jams, and had some defense behind ’em. Chesney came in and answered the bell. Saylor gets the win. Chesney gets the save, and it’s all about team softball. We don’t have rely on just one person. We have two good ones there in the circle.”
Suess was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Gabby Leach was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases. Alannah Leach went 1-for-3, and came up with some huge defensive plays in right field. “That’s been part of our MO and our tradition for a long time,” Borths said of the squeeze execution. “That’s something that we stress up and down the lineup, being able to put the bunt down in those key situations. Mal executing in that first inning, that first run is always big. And then Taylor coming up big, executing the squeeze, bringing home Victoria Serrano to give us that bit of a cushion that started the rally, that was super huge.
