“Kent State was a rallying cry for progress to be made, in which students, particularly of this university, had to rise and demand change and engage in a fight for justice. A continual fight that has not ended.'
KENT, Ohio – Several hundred members of the Kent State University community and visitors gathered at the Kent State Commons on Thursday to mark the moment the Ohio National Guard fired on students protesting the Vietnam War 53 years ago – killing four and wounding nine.
“This theme reminds us that we can use our voices to create positive change,” Said Senior Vice President and Provost Melody Tankersley. May 4 Task Force President Avery Hall spoke about the importance of students gaining a deeper understanding of the events of May 4, 1970, which she said many students see as just a “blip” in the university’s history.
“Kent State was a rallying cry for progress to be made, in which students, particularly of this university, had to rise and demand change and engage in a fight for justice. A continual fight that has not ended,” Hall continued. “And when looking into the legacy of activism and the tragedy that’s behind it, we see that the work of May 4 is never truly complete. It continues to unfold and persist on our campus, in our community and among our students.
