With starts in 12 of the Astros' 20 games so far in June, Chas McCormick has homered three times and produced a slash line of .319/.396/.553 this month. For as long as Yordan Alvarez remains sidelined by an oblique injury, the Astros will have to mitigate the loss of a lineup presence no individual is likely to replace.

That in turn has made getting Diaz’s bat in the lineup more of a priority. Carrying three catchers over the first two months ostensibly gave the Astros coverage to deploy Diaz in other spots. But he still appeared in just 22 of their first 55 games and was hitting .226 at the end of May. “I don’t think I’m any less aggressive now than I was in the past,” Diaz said through a translator. “I think it’s just mostly I’ve gotten a better sense of the strike zone. … I think that kind of goes back to confidence. trying to continue to stay aggressive, obviously, but some of those pitches that are off the plate I can recognize.”
