‘Thelma & Louise’: The ’90s Classic of Female Rage That Still Has the Power to Shock

‘Thelma & Louise’ was a watershed moment for female representation—and female rage—onscreen. “I couldn’t get from one part of the ’90s to another without going through Thelma & Louise,” says Karina Longworth.

, but was told, according to Longworth, that putting a female director on this project was a bridge too far. “The feedback she got…was that you are already really risking a lot, making this film in which these women are so powerful and so violent,” Longworth says. “We need to balance things out by having a male director, otherwise we won’t get away with this.

There’s the famous Grand Canyon ending, of course, but the even bolder scene comes before that, when the women lure a trucker who’s been harassing them over to a desolate parking lot. The confrontation ends with Thelma and Louise, guns in hand, driving away while the man’s rig goes up in flames. It’s a pretty stark punishment for a man who’s more annoying than criminal, but a bold act of rebellion for two women who have decided to stop accepting their lot in life, consequences be damned.
