Rey's New Jedi Order movie is the perfect opportunity to make Gray Jedi canon after 10 years of Star Wars stories setting up the possibility.

Star Wars has been setting up Gray Jedi for over a decade, and this exciting theory suggests Rey's New Jedi Order movie can finally make them a reality. Gray Jedi is a term with two meanings: a Jedi who tries to balance the light and dark sides of the Force without being corrupted, and a Jedi who wishes to operate outside the strict guidelines of the Jedi High Council.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Gray Jedi have always been a controversial topic in the Star Wars community, with Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm Story Group believing the idea contradicts George Lucas' view on the Force. Lucas viewed the dark side as corruption and would not have endorsed a Jedi that tried to balance both sides of the Force equally.

Even so, the sequel trilogy was not the only Disney Star Wars story to explore this concept of balance. Star Wars Rebels season 3 introduced a character called the Bendu, an ancient being who claimed to be the balance between the light and dark sides of the Force. Season 4 featured a mural of the Force Wielders of Mortis, first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with the Father, the Daughter, and the Son representing the balance, the light, and the dark respectively.

Ancient Jedi Were Not Servants Of The Light - And Rey Is Learning From Them The prequel era Jedi may have served the light specifically, but that was not always the case. The mural of the Prime Jedi on Ahch-To, similar to the symbol of Yin and Yang, shows that the first Jedi adhered to a more literal balance between the light and dark side.

Star Wars: The High Republic also introduced a new type of Jedi that are remarkably similar to the second definition of Gray Jedi. The Jedi of the High Republic era viewed themselves as servants of the light, but some Jed identified themselves as Wayseekers, meaning they wanted to operate independently of the Jedi High Council. This offered them greater freedom to meditate, help systems overthrow tyrants, pursue their own interests, and follow the will of the Force above all else.
