From windy beaches to self-built homes, the photographer has spent 45 years capturing the region’s people and places – and the changes that have transformed it

River to River follows the coastline from the Mersey in the south to the Ribble in the north. The area is defined by the two estuaries and the limits of accessibility caused by the bodies of water‘Between the early 1970s and mid-80s, large housing estates were built in Ainsdale near Southport. The houses and bungalows were built on the seaward side of the village on areas that were originally sand dunes.

These spaces existed because of the demolition of buildings, both industrial and domestic, in inner city areas. In some cases, the demolition sites existed for a short space of time before redevelopment. With others, the ground lay unused for many years‘Over a long career in photography, I have found enjoyment in photographing a wide range of subjects and experimenting in ways of making pictures.
