A hiker at an East Bay park spotted a non-native snake, presumed to be a red-tailed boa, on Sunday, and officials said the park has not seen the snake since the original sighting.
A hiker spotted what's thought to be a red-tailed boa on the side of Big Bear Trail in Anthony Chabot Regional Park on Feb. 13.
The snake was seen on the side of the Big Bear Trail in Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Oakland, Jen Vanya, a spokesperson for the park, said in an email. "The snake is not venomous and is not a threat to the public," Vanya wrote."The snake may be in danger as it is not native to our Bay Area climate, which is much colder than its native habitat of warm tropical forests or grasslands."
Park staff are keeping an eye out for the snake. If it is found, it will be taken to the Oakland Zoo, where experts will asses its health conditions and decide on appropriate long-term placement. Red-tailed boas, more commonly known as boa constrictors, are found in tropical South America and some islands in the Caribbean. They are frequently kept as pets.
