Peter Hartcher: There's good news, bad news and worse news about Donald Trump

In sum: "He is the only president ever elected on a platform that explicitly rejected all of the pillars of US grand strategy." And while that helps explain some of the chaos unfolding in the world, it also offers some predictability. That’s the end of the good news.

Partly that’s due to Malcolm Turnbull’s deft handling of Trump early in his presidency. And partly it’s due to some good footwork by Joe Hockey, who turns out to be a first-rate ambassador. But largely, as Thomas Wright says, it’s sheer luck. Should it be a priority for the US to strengthen ties with its allies? "There used to be no difference in views between Democrats and Republicans on this," Stokes tells me. "Now 77 per cent of Democrats say it should be a priority and only 44 per cent of Republicans do." That is a direct result of Trump.
