Peter Dutton has never liked the idea of Australia accepting Palestinians fleeing the conflict in Gaza and has never been shy of saying so. Now, though, he's at odds with the spy chief.
There's no grey in Dutton's views on the war in Gaza . Not even Australia's spy chief can shift his position Peter Dutton has never liked the idea of Australia accepting Palestinians fleeing the conflict in Gaza and has never been shy of saying so.
Yesterday he called for a complete halt. "I don't think people should be coming in from that war zone at all at the moment," the opposition leader told Sky News. "It's not prudent to do so, and I think it puts our national security at risk." Instead, Palestinians here remain in limbo. They've only been allowed in on visitors' visas, which don't allow work rights or access to education or healthcare. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is working on a more permanent solution, but nothing has been settled yet.At the same time, the government is also keen to demonstrate a rigorous national security focus remains. It hasn't just flung the doors open to all who may want to rebuild their lives in Australia.
Dutton now is demanding a higher bar be cleared for Palestinians fleeing Gaza. He says it's due to the higher security risks. Others suggest darker motives are at play. The debate here in Australia, however, has now seen the Coalition, unusually, at odds with the director-general of ASIO, Mike Burgess. The spy chief told Insiders on Sunday "there are security checks" before visas are granted. He said those referred to his organisation were dealt with "effectively". Palestinians voicing only "rhetorical" support for Hamas, Burgess said, are "not a problem".
